A detailed monthly budget template is similar to the zero-based budget, because it follows the same budget method by allocating each dollar of income toward an outflow, resulting in a zero balance. However, the difference with the detailed monthly budget is that it helps manage your budget by salary and not monthly. This helps to reduce the possibility of excessive spending in a pay period, preventing it from being short in the following period. In this global budget template you enter all your entries and exits on the first page and control the transactions on the following sheets.

Zero base budget

A zero based budget template is a monthly budget where the difference between your monthly income and expenses must be equal to zero. The concept behind this method of budgeting is that you allocate every dollar of your income to a certain area of your budget to know exactly where your money is going. This template includes two sections: on one side you will list all your income for the month and on the other side all your expenses. Once each side is completed, you will be able to see if the difference in your income and expenses is zero and if not, adjust accordingly.

The importance of a personal budget

Creating a personal budget is not only important for your financial well-being and your peace of mind, but also for your short- and long-term goals. Taking control of your finances with a personal budget template will help you focus on those goals.

To begin, consider the following steps in setting your personal budget:

Determine your goals. Take the time to make a list of your short and long term goals. Define why each goal is a priority, how it will achieve it and the timeframe in which you would like to achieve it. Short-term goals should only take a year to achieve them and may include such things as the payment of a credit card. Your long-term goals can take many years, such as saving for your child’s education or your own retirement.
Track your expenses. To make estimates of the exact amount that you should allocate to each expense within your personal budget, you need to know how much you are currently spending in each area. Check your bank statements for the past three or four months to get an idea of your expenses. Of course you can change the amount you budgeted for each item, but this will provide a baseline to get you started.
Customize your budget. Using a personal budget template helps you start your budget, although you can always tailor it to your specific needs. Also, creating a budget a month does not mean that your expenses and goals are the same in the next. Make sure you have monthly entry records in your budget and do not hesitate to update it when your circumstances change.
Starting with a personal budget template in Excel

Now that you have created a list of your goals and started tracking your expenses, you can create your actual budget using a personal budget template.

Begin by downloading your personal budget template and entering your income, savings goals, and spending amounts for the first month. This template contains two sheets, one to break down the budget and the other a control board.

Inside the first page you will find three sections, including income, savings and expenses. The categories in the income section are:

Salary
Interests
Dividends
Refunds
Deal
Pension
Miscellaneous
The next section is where you enter your savings goals. These objectives should include the short- and long-term savings objectives identified above. This section includes the following categories, but can be changed according to your goals:

Emergency fund
Transfer to Savings
Retirement plan
Investments
Education
Other
The last section of the personal budget sheet is for expenses. This section has several major categories, with multiple associated sub-categories. Major expense categories include:

Home
Transport
Daily expenses
Entertainment
Health
Holidays
Once you have entered the individual amounts into each of the categories of income, savings and expenses, you will see that the total for each month is calculated at the end of each column. In addition, the totals are calculated at the end of each row, representing the total of the year to date for each budgeted item, category and section.

In the second sheet you will find the budget control panels. Panels are useful for quickly viewing the summary and status of your budget and will be automatically updated as you make changes to the personal budget sheet. The control panel sheet included in this template has the following distributions:

Summary of potential savings. This summary calculates your potential savings on a monthly basis, after you have met your current savings goals for the expenses incurred. The savings potential is calculated by subtracting total savings and total expenses from total revenues.
Diagram of income to expenses. This bar graph gives a quick look at the difference between your total monthly income and expenses, which is useful to see the overall status of your budget.
